Cradle Mountain National Park is one of those places that truly lives up to its reputation. The walk circumnavigating Lake Dove is an absolute must, offering ever-changing views of the mountain and reflections that make every step worth it. For those seeking more of a challenge, there are several strenuous trails in the area that climb higher into the alpine terrain, rewarding hikers with sweeping views across the Tasmanian wilderness.

I’ve always loved the shorter walk from the Cradle Mountain Lodge along the Dove Canyon Track, which winds through stands of Pencil Pines and past the cascading Knyvet Falls. It’s a peaceful section of forest where you can slow down and really take in the sounds of the water and the scent of the pines.

For the truly adventurous, Cradle Mountain marks the starting point of the famous Overland Track — a six-day hike through some of Tasmania’s most spectacular wilderness, finishing at the tranquil shores of Lake St Clair. It’s a journey through alpine meadows, ancient rainforest, and glacial valleys that captures the essence of Tasmania’s wild heart.

And of course, photographing the little boat shed with Cradle Mountain rising behind it is a must — one of the most iconic and timeless scenes in all of Tasmania.
