The Port of Echuca offers a glimpse into Australia’s riverboat past, once the largest inland port in the country. In the 1800s, paddle steamers were the lifeblood of the Murray River, transporting wool, timber, and supplies between remote towns and major cities. Echuca thrived as a bustling trade hub, with its iconic redgum wharf standing as a testament to that era.

We spent a lovely afternoon aboard one of the heritage paddle steamers, cruising gently along the Murray. It was a relaxing way to take in the river’s calm beauty and the surrounding bushland. As the old engine chugged rhythmically and the paddle wheel turned, it felt like stepping back in time. A visit to the Port of Echuca is both scenic and steeped in history—highly recommended.
