Magnetic Island

Magnetic Island, just a short ferry ride from Townsville, is a tropical paradise with a relaxed, island-town feel. The island is covered in eucalypt forest and ringed by calm bays and granite headlands that make it ideal for swimming, hiking, and exploring. The Forts Walk is one of the highlights, offering panoramic views over the Coral Sea and frequent sightings of wild koalas along the trail.

Each bay has its own charm — from the lively Horseshoe Bay to the peaceful beauty of Alma Bay and Radical Bay. The clear waters, rocky outcrops, and golden beaches make it a dream location for photography, snorkelling, and sunset watching. It’s the perfect blend of adventure and tranquillity, just minutes from the mainland.

I can highly recommend hiring a Mini Moke for at least a full day when visiting Magnetic Island. It’s such a fun way to explore — and our kids absolutely loved zooming around the island in it!
