Tucked in Victoria’s far northwest, Murray-Sunset National Park spans 633,000 hectares of untouched semi-arid wilderness. Bordering South Australia and the Murray River, this vast park, the state’s second largest, is a photographer’s paradise, famed for its surreal Pink Lakes and fiery sunsets.

Pink Lakes Dawn

One crisp morning, I set out before dawn, camera in hand, to capture the Pink Lakes—As the sun rose above Lake Hardy, the salt-crusted surfaces glowed a soft pink, thanks to algae blooming in the salty waters. The silence was profound, broken only by the crunch of salt underfoot. If you come here in Spring (we visited in Autumn) the park is transformed with wildflowers like Murray lilies and spider orchids, while the Pink Lakes shift from deep pink to shimmering white depending on the season.

Outback Adventures

Murray-Sunset is a playground for explorers. Four-wheel drive tracks like Grub Track and Pioneer Drive wind through mallee scrub, perfect for adventurous drivers. Bushwalking trails, from short loops around Lake Crosbie to the challenging 58km Sunset Remote Walking Track, reveal the park’s raw beauty. Canoeing along the Murray River’s floodplains or fishing at Lindsay Island offers a serene escape. Birdwatchers will spot Mallee fowl, regent parrots, and mallee emu-wrens among the park’s 300 bird species.

Salt and Serenity

The park’s history adds depth. Remnants of a salt industry (1916–1975) dot the Pink Lakes, with rusted relics and abandoned tramways preserved by the desert air. Mopoke Hut, built in 1962 for graziers, stands as a testament to the pastoral era. Camping under starry skies at Lake Crosby or Lake Becking Campground feels like stepping into the outback, with basic facilities and a sense of solitude.

Sunset Spectacle

As evening fell, capturing the sun setting over Lake Crosby was a highlight of our visit to the park. The park certainly lives up to its name, delivering sunsets that rival any in the world. Murray-Sunset is Victoria’s outback —remote, rugged, and unforgettable.
