Yanga National Park near Balranald in southwest New South Wales drawvard is the historic Yanga Homestead in this 66,734-hectare outback haven along the Murrumbidgee River. The homestead, built in 1870, caught our attention with its grand verandas and weathered timbers, reflecting the Riverina’s pastoral past as a busy sheep station linked to the region’s largest woolshed.

We took the short walk from the homestead to the bird hide, a highlight we highly recommend. The trail passed through wetlands where we saw spoonbills and white-bellied sea eagles, offering a quiet view of the park’s wildlife.

The nearby woolshed’s massive wooden interior revealed the scale of 19th-century wool production. Yorta Yorta and Muthi Muthi heritage is strong here, with middens and scarred trees near the homestead sharing ancient stories. Camping is available at Yanga Creek Rest Area and other park sites.
